In the last season of our life our obligations become more vivid, more urgent. We might even be running out of time. Among our “things to do it is time to make a list and finalize our future wishes like our will, living will, power of attorney, organ donations. insurance information and beneficiaries, do not resuscitate. Will we use a funeral home, and which one is that. What about cremation, who is handling my funeral wishes and or contributions? Where will my final resting place be?
While we reflect on the answers to questions like who I will give my legacy to or how can I help my loved one’s best transition from my loss what always come to my mind is memoirs. It is a great opportunity for me to still be with them and guide them for generations to come. It helps answer the question “How can I best serve my loved ones”?
“Memoir” means memories. A series of events of which we have intimate knowledge. Unlike autobiographies, memoirs do not have to be chronological. They can lack a starting point like birth, a new venture, a wedding and just jump right in with “here we are”.
If the true intention of memoirs is to provide a legacy to the family, we left behind then it needs to be truthful. It needs to include the positive and the dark side of us. The dark side should show our vulnerability, our feelings, the who, what, when and why of circumstances, problem solving and mistakes. All of which our loved ones can use when they need to decide how to handle their situation.
How many times have you heard someone say “What would mom or dad do in this situation? Properly put together memoirs can provide that answer.
